HISTORY and PHILOSOPHY

St. James was founded in 1948 to educate children of average to above-average intelligence in an unapologetically Christian environment. It is a private coeducational school serving a student population of 285 children in preschool (age 3) through sixth grade. The School is affiliated with St. James Episcopal Church in Texarkana, the Diocese of Dallas, and is fully accredited by the Southern Association of Episcopal Schools.

Our campus, situated on 35 acres of natural woodland on the Texas side of the Texas/Arkansas border, comprises six academic buildings, an administration building, full size gym, tennis court, swimming pool, cafeteria, three outdoor plays capes, and an outdoor amphitheater. A diverse student population is drawn from both sides of the twin cities as well as from surrounding rural communities in both Texas and Arkansas.

The teacher/student ratio of 10:1 makes small classes a reality and fosters a family type atmosphere throughout a child's years at St. James. The school staff is composed of the head of school, assistant head of school, a business manager, receptionist/secretary, assistant teachers, three after-school staff members, a cafeteria, maintenance, and grounds staff, twenty full time teachers, and four part time teachers. Of the full time teachers and administrators, There are four with post graduate degrees, and three with graduate hours toward their masters degrees.

Each member of our staff is selected on the basis of his or her Christian character, academic training, and experience. We strive to choose teachers from whom one would learn even if the association were not in a teaching situation. It is our purpose to have each teacher help educate the entire child, rather than merely to teach his or her own subject.

*St. James Day School is an equal opportunity employer. The selection, transfer, promotion, demotion, non-renewal, and dismissal of professional staff personnel at St. James Day School shall be made without regard to race, color, national origin, sex, age, or disability that does not impair an individual's ability to perform the essential function of his/her job.
