Miss
Teen Dallas 2008
Paris.
She is taking two classes in Paris - a history class and a digital photography
class. She reports that it is beautiful there and shares pictures of some
of the places she is seeing: the Louvre, the Musee d'Orsay, Musee Rodin,
Musee Picasso, Saint Chapelle cathedral, Notre-Dame cathedral (four times!),
The Medieval Museum, Auvers (a small town outside Paris where van Gogh lived),
Giverny (another small town outside Paris where Monet lived), the Eiffel
Tower, the Arc du Triumph, La Defense, The Dome Church (where Napoleon's
tomb is), and many many other places! "It has been an amazing experience,
to see the old world mixed in with the new...not to mention the wonderful
art and architecture this city has! The food is amazing, and the people
are really nice," Christina reports. Christina's mom is our own
K4 teacher, Bonnie Taylor. We appreciate Christina sharing both her wonderful
photos and amazing experiences with us at St. James.
Molly
Quinn ('06) Max Wright ('95), also a graduate of the University of Texas-Austin, was recently commissioned as Second Lieutenant in the United States Marine Corps. He is a March graduate of the USMC Offricer Candidate School in Quantico, Virgina, where he and wife, Paula, moved last August. Having completed this phase of training, he is awaiting word of his next station.
Jillian
Woosley & Rachel Thomas
Rachel Thomas was first runner up and Jillian Woosley
2nd runner up in the
2008 Miss Texas High School Pageant.
St. James students have beauty as well as talent and brains!
After receiving the Annual Report last month, Barbara Grier DeCastro ('64) wrote to say congratulations on the successes of our more recent alumni featured in the last Annual Fund publication. In that article, we asked that alumni get in touch with the school if they could add their own to our list of successes. Ms. DeCastro definitely could! She reports that she graduated 3rd in her class at Arkansas High and received a National Merit Letter of Commendation as well.
John Jiles ('99) is now a UT Longhorn! After graduating #4 in his Queen City High School class in 2005, he decided to move to Austin! John is a 3rd year student in Clinical Laboratory Science, with plans of attending Pharmacy School after graduation. We were happy to hear from John and hope he'll take time to keep us updated on his academic adventures in Austin.
Thanks to the efforts of Kelsey Contreras in contacting classmates, and his mother, Carolyn Adams, Chris Hailey '96,(+1983-2007+) is still contributing to his alma mater! In memory of Chris, the Class of 1996 and Mom Carolyn are reviving Lego Robotics for our Middle School technology program with a sizeable donation to upgrade the software and buy new ROBOLAB kits. Chris lost a long battle with bone cancer this past spring and, in honor of his love for his childhood school, the memorial service was held in the St. James Amphitheater on a beautiful spring day. Many thanks to family and classmates who are making this robotics program possible in honor of Chris.

A MODEL in our MIDST:
Arielle Angelovich
('01) moved
to Austin, Texas soon after her graduation from 6th grade in 2002. Judging
from above, she has blossomed into a beautiful, independent young woman
who has definite plans of her own. This picture was in TEEN
VOGUE (September 2007) and mentions that in addition to
modeling and playing chess, Arielle intends to try out for the University
of Texas Cross County Team this fall. HOOK 'EM HORNS and Go Arielle!
Two
of Arielle's St. James' classmates, Mary
Alice Martin ('01) and Stephanie Stoeckl ('01),
have also been in the news for receiving their Girl Scout Gold Awards.
The girls were members of Troop 78 at St. James and have the distinction
of being the first two girls in Conifer Council to earn ALL THREE TOP
AWARDS: Bronze (Junior Scouts), SILVER (Cadelle Scouts) and GOLD (Senior
Scouts). Congratulations to these two outstanding girls on their achievements.
Read below to find even more honors earned by these two! St. James is
still in the process of educating Stephanie's younger sister Katherine
(a 2nd grader at the school).
Katherine Martin ('98), older sister to Mary Alice, is in Washington D.C. this semester. Kathering is serving an internship in the U.S. Attorney's office, working in the major crimes division! Whew! When she is not fighting crime in our nation's capitol,Ms. Martin is a senior honor student at Texas Christian University in Ft. Worth, where she will meet up with Mary Alice when she returns to campus next semester.

Dr. Kiran Chennupati ('90) , recently married in Dallas. Attending the wedding was his fourth grade teacher from St. James and her husband, Dr. and Mrs. Tom Wagy. The Wagys report seeing and visiting with many former parents at St. James as well as Kiran's younger brother Sravi (also a student of Ms. Wagy's.)

He and his wife, Amy, live in Memphis and are proud parents of a brand new daughter, Meagan Lee Havins Miller .
Congratulations also to these Texas Middle School students honored by DUKE UNIVERSITY Talent Search for scoring in the top 25% of the nation on the 7th grade standardized test: Elizabeth Cook ~ Ellen Orr ~ Taylor Wilson
where she was Vice-President of Pi Beta Phi Sorority. Having found our
web site, she has kindly sent in news of her life since that time. In
June of 2000, Angela married Matt Kincade and began a very successful
career in the Pharmaceutical Industry, with Merck & Co., as a Senior
Cardiovascular Specialty Representative. In November 2005, Angela and
Matt were blessed with a beautiful baby girl, Anna Elizabeth Kincade.
Currently, Angela, Matt, and Anna live in Memphis, TN where Matt is finishing
his last year in his Urology Residency training at The University of Tennessee.
After six years in the Pharmaceutical business, Angela is now staying
at home for a few years to enjoy time with precious Anna Elizabeth who
is 1 1/2 years old.
Who
knows, maybe one say she will attend St. James Day School!
Angela and Matt will celebrate their seventh Wedding Anniversary this
June. To quote Angela,
My
days at St. James were filled with some of my best childhood memories!
The education that we received and the friendships that we made are unsurpassed!
I think of all my St. James friends from time to time, and I wish them
all the very best in life! Feel free to keep in touch with me at angela.kincade@gmail.com.
Anglea also sent some photos of her beautiful family. One is of Angela
with Anna on Mother's Day 2007. The other is of Angela, Matt, & Anna
in Arizona on a recent vacation - April 2007. On that vacation in Phoenix,
at the Arizona Biltmore, Angela just happened to bump into her childhood
best friend and St. James Alum, Shelby Morgan! In addition, she had fun
catching up with St. James Alums - Jason Sadowski, Andy Wright and Ben
Mayo at Jason Sadowski's Wedding. It is always great fun to hear from far away and long ago St. James grads! Tom Needham found us on the web and sent the following message to the school:
Tom
Needham ('67 -8th grade)
I attended St James, K-8, before leaving
Texarkana in 1967. A lot of fond memories, playing flag football, spring
performance of a different Operetta each year, Mr. Wagner driving the
old school bus, staring contests with Mr. Blake, and many more. Very good
times. I retired from the Air Force a few years ago as a Lt Colonel and
now make a living as a consultant to the Intelligence Community here in
Washington D.C. My mother still lives in Texarkana, and while visiting
her earlier this year I drove by St James, So nice to see the school carries
on and thrives. I’ve been married for almost 31 years and have one
surviving child, Thomas Kyle, four years old. All my best. There will
always be a special place in my heart for St. James

Michael Droske ('94)
- lives in Austin and is a fraud investigator. He also enjoys performing
with fellow musicians when time allows. While deciding what kind of graduate
school he wants to pursue, Michael tends to a vegetable garden in his
backyard and writes short stories.
Katie
Droske Crabtree('95) graduated from William Woods University with
a degree in Equestrian Science. She recently married Adam Crabtree and
is moving onto their land in Bivins, TX. Katie will be training horses
and working with people who want to learn to ride.
David Droske ('99) - David is living
in Texarkana. He is hard at work in nursing school at Texarkana College
— following in Mom's footsteps!
Amanda
Ellison ('96)is with 5 grad students
and one other 5th year senior from UT-Austin and 7 grad students from
U
of
New Mexico. They
are all design students with individual focus projects. Amanda is videoing
(with a vintage 1980 camera) and using a new Nikon Digital and then taking
vintage plastic toys (dinosaurs, astronauts, buzzards, blocks) to film
on the Southwest landscapes. They camp, and are paired up for cooking
daily, get to shower every 2 weeks, wash hair in creeks or grocery bathroom
sinks and have lectures with a guest tent for those who drive to meet
them. They have filmed about 50 movies on location at an old air base
which still has towers and structures that Disney and other studios erected
for filming. Maybe Amanda or her mom will keep us updated on this very
unique experience!
Katie Buchanan ('89) writes that she is living in Dallas, and works as the Special Events Director for The Dallas Opera. Katie plans galas, donor recognition events, cast events, and all of the fund-raising for each, through individuals and corporations. Prioir to the Opera, she was a Special Events Assistant in the Development Office at Children's Medical Center. Katie reports that she still does much volunteer work for the hospital, since she spent so much time there as a child! (Katie was a kidney transplant patient at age eight.) Katie was also kind enough to send information on big sister Susan (Susan Buchanan Jeter ('81)) who lives in Little Rock with her husband, Matt and their children: Hudgens, 6 and Kate, 2...named for her aunt of course! Susan does behavioral testing and counseling at Access Schools. Hudgens is starting pre-K, and Kate is a total 2 year old and runs the show at all times! Katie says she drove through the campus when she was in T-town for Helen Mobley's wedding, and thought it beautiful. Katie was happy to find our web site and sends word to the school to "Keep up the good work!" She also sends her best to all the staff - especially those who were here during Katie's time: Ms. Joey, Ms. Wagy, Ms. Wright, and Ms. Miller.

Randi Grounds ('00), was a St. James student from 1995 until 2000 when her family moved to Palestine, Texas. Having had a great experience at St. James, Randi enrolled at All Saints Episcopal School in Tyler for the next three years, and again had to transfer in 2003. She graduated from Albans Episcopal School in Waco and is currently a student a Vanguard College Prep in Waco. Randi's mom writes that St. James gave Randi so much during her 5 years . . . a solid foundation on which she has continued to build. To contact Randi, you can get her address from her mother, Dawn Grounds. We'd love to hear more of Randi's Episcopal School experiences!
Alex Fuerst ('97), is currently interning at Encore Multimedia in Longview, Texas. He has completed 3 semesters at John Brown University and will be moving to a new school in the spring to continue pursuing a degree in film and digital media. No one who knew Alex at St. James will be surprised to know he is training for a career in some type of media! He was a star art student in Ms. Wright's art classes, and a star computer student for Ms. Miller. He designed much of the art work for the St. James Literary magazine as a 6th grader! As a senior at Texar High, Alex produced a two-hour documentary, The Road to the Championship, about the THS state championship season in the fall of '02. During his four years on the TigerVision staff, Alex earned top national awards from the Journalism Educators Association for Videography and In Camera feature. He also raked in honors for BEST COMEDY and BEST PSA at Fest-eye-ful for two years in a row. Alex spent the summer of 2004 as a videographer on a 3-week mission trip to Kenya and Rwanda. We'll be looking for the name ALEX FUERST in lights one day!
Melissa Wisdom Colbert ('88), found our web site from her home in Kingwood, Texas where she is a teacher in the Special Education department of her school district. Her specialty (and passion) is the Parent/Home Training she does for the Autistic population. After working with autistic students, Melissa goes into the home to train parents in the skills that can benefit their children. Melissa and husband Bobby also have a gorgeous daughter (obviously takes after her beautiful mother), Faith, who turned 8 years old last summer. Melissa also sends a big hello to St. James from her mother, Billenda Hemeyer, a former lower school computer facilator at St. James, now teaching in Houston.

Hello:
Just found the St. James website and wanted to make sure that I was available for old friends to find me. Graduated from TCU in Fort Worth, in 1980 with a Marketing/Journalism/Business degree and moved to Dallas Texas. I Currently reside in Richardson, Texas, and have 3 Daughters, Danielle, Madison, and Cameron.St. James was definitely one of the greatest experiences of my life. Kiran
Chennupati ('93),
was
named DeBakey Scholar for the graduating class of 2004 at Baylor
College of Medicine in Houston. Excerpts from his award letter:
Each year, a member of the incoming senior class is designated as the DeBakey Scholar. This selection is predicated upon the demonstration of an exceptional degree of academic excellence and scholarship. . . . The entire committee extends congratulations to you for your superior accomplishments as a student at Baylor College of Medicine.
Younger brother, Sravi Chennupati ('95) recently sent Ms. Wagy an email about his recent adventures - more reason for St. James to be proud! A may graduate of the University of California at Berkeley, he plans post-graduate continuation of work at the UCSF lab, working on brain tumors— while he applies to med school. Sravi also related tales of his visit with his grandfather in India during a past winter break. As an aside to Ms. Wagy, Sravi talked about working at an inner city high school outreach program last summer teaching a PreCalculus course. His comment about teaching: "Teaching is sooo hard! Makes me feel very fortunate for the teachers I've had!" For our own education, Sravi sent the web address of the American Cancer Society. Maybe we should visit.

Mr. Headmaster; Members of the Board and Faculty; Friends; and Fellow Classmates: During the eleven years I have been in St. James School, never once has it failed to support its cause, not only throughout the school itself, but throughout the whole 4-states area. That cause being to provide a Christian education through a Christian atmosphere and point of view. In this cause is the school's very existence. The school succeeds in its cause because its faculty cares enough to want to give each student a good education, and because the parents of each student care enough for their child that they give him the opportunity to receive such an education. When I say the faculty wants to give a good education, I mean give! Do you think that the faculty of Saint James Day School teaches for the money? Certainly not. It's because every teacher in Saint James cares. Nine times out of ten, that is why a student learns something - because the teacher cares. At Saint James, the faculty is not against the student, but for him all the way. Though
St. James implants a sound education into its students' minds, the
students are not forced into learning. At Saint James, the amount
of work and studying is usually more than average. The assignments
are accepted under any and all circumstances and they are always
done! Very seldom does a Saint James student come to class unprepared.
By the assignments alone, two things are accomplished: 2. A great amount of responsibility is put on the student's shoulders. At Saint James, responsibility, accepted well and properly, is rewarded graciously. Saint James School, though closely related to St. James Church, is a Christian school and not just an Episcopal school. There are separate Bible classes so that no one will think a foreign religion is being forced on him. Because St. James is Christian, private, and provides one of the best educational programs in the United States, many people persecute it. What more could anyone want from a school? Saint James has done a lot for anyone who has ever been in it. The graduating class of '66 cannot thank the school enough, but we would like to say "thank-you" for giving us the best, and we hope that we will never forget what we have learned from good old Saint James! |
"Mr. Lawrence was truly a wonderful man - he worked very diligently to bring the English/New England boarding school educational traditions to a little place in the South. He would challenge me . . . and it worked. The experience of attending that school was remarkable. It prepared me for so many things for which I otherwise do not think I would have been successful.
. . . (after my parents moved us to Arizona) I discovered in my final years of high school that my previous education at St. James put me far ahead in most of my classes. While the educational benefits were excellent, it was the knowledge of a Christian education, the camaraderie of students, and the campus setting that really set me up for much of the more important social interactions that adulthood would bring. After military service in the '60's, I graduated from DePaul University in Chicago and have gone on for Master's work in Computer Science."
"It is so good to see that the school continues to transform itself into such a positive influence on young minds. Keep up the good work - after all, it is God's!"
